Usage Limits Were The Point

The Catch

What I am watching: Anthropic talks about five-hour limits, peak-hours reductions, and API rate limits. There is no mention of the weekly limit changing.

That matters because for heavy Claude Code users, the five-hour window is only one part of the frustration. If you hit the five-hour cap less often but still run into the weekly ceiling, the shape of the problem changes, but it does not fully disappear.

So yes, this is a real improvement. It should make Claude Code feel less cramped during active work sessions.

But I do not think we should treat it as “usage limits solved” yet. For our kind of work, the question is simple: can engineers use the tool heavily throughout the week without suddenly having to change model, switch account, downgrade task scope, or wait?

That is the thing we need to observe.

Why This Deal Is Weird

The official story is compute. Anthropic needs more capacity. SpaceX has Colossus 1. Deal done.

That part makes sense.

The stranger part is the orbital compute language. Both companies say Anthropic has expressed interest in partnering with SpaceX to develop multiple gigawatts of orbital AI compute capacity. Basically, data centers in space.

That sounds very “the future is here”, and maybe one day it will be. If the compute race keeps running into land, power, and cooling constraints, people are going to look for stranger answers.

But for now, I would separate the practical from the cinematic.

The practical part is Colossus 1 giving Anthropic more near-term capacity. That helps us now.

The cinematic part is orbital AI compute. Interesting, but not something I would build an operational plan around yet.

The Speculation

There is already plenty of it.

Some people are asking whether this means any kind of training-data sharing between Anthropic and xAI. I have not seen evidence for that. It is just speculation.

The joke version is “Grok is about to top the benchmarks.” Funny, but still just a joke.

There is also the spite theory: that this is partly about Elon Musk’s ongoing fight with OpenAI. Al Jazeera framed the deal in the context of Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI, and WIRED pointed out how strange the partnership looks given Musk’s past criticism of Anthropic. That context is real.

But I would be careful not to overread it. These companies all need compute. If the capacity is available and the terms make sense, even strange partnerships start to look normal.

AI infrastructure is becoming too expensive and too scarce for everyone to stay neatly inside their own camps.

What This Means For Us

Short term, this is useful.

If Claude Code’s five-hour limit is doubled, our developers should feel that immediately. Longer sessions, fewer interruptions, less context-switching around rate caps.

But the lesson from last issue still stands. Usage limits are the operational bottleneck now, not just a product footnote. A compute deal can improve that, but it does not remove the need for better context management, tighter prompting, and tools like caveman and lean-ctx.

So I am happy about the increase. But I am not changing the plan yet.

We keep testing. We watch whether the new five-hour limits actually improve real SWE sessions. We watch whether the weekly cap still bites. We watch whether Claude gets more reliable when Anthropic has more room to serve demand.

The short-term benefit is clear enough. The rest we find out as we go.
