Overview
Dispute Buddy is a web-based tool that helps users and lawyers organize message-heavy legal disputes. It brings conversations from Gmail, iMessage, WhatsApp, and Messenger into one timeline, making evidence easier to organize and export for court.
The client came to us after several redesign attempts that just didn’t work.
They needed a product that finally felt usable — something both the average person and a busy lawyer could pick up and understand. The main goal was to create a smoother experience around three core actions: collecting messages, organizing them into legal issues, and exporting them into an affidavit-ready PDF.
They wanted something simple, but not too plain — something smart, structured, and capable of handling complex information without overwhelming the user. With pressure to turn around a project that had been passed from designer to designer, we knew we had to get it right.
I was assigned to redesign the experience from the ground up. I started by simplifying the two main journeys — one for the person uploading their messages, and another for the lawyer reviewing and tagging them.
We designed a single timeline view that shows all imported conversations in order, no matter the platform. From there, users could tag messages, add comments, and sort them by issue.
The tagging and export features were especially important — we made sure they were quick, clear, and practical for legal use. Throughout the project, I worked closely with the client, taking their feedback seriously and adjusting quickly when needed. If I didn’t agree, I explained why — and they appreciated that. In the end, the design was approved and finally felt like a solid step forward after so many failed versions.
